Back in elementary school, Amina thought her biggest problem was stage fright. Despite her singing talents, she cannot bring herself to undertake a solo with the school chorus. Now that she is in middle school, her life gets even more complicated. Her best friend Soojin suddenly wants to befriend the popular girl who once bullied them for being different, and vandalism at the local mosque forces her to confront bigotry against people of her faith for the first time. While shaken by all these changes, Amina quickly learns the power of kindness and solidarity as her multicultural community comes together to rebuild the Islamic Center. In the process, she becomes more comfortable in her own skin. Khan’s timely entry into middle-grade fiction sends a positive message of inclusion to readers of all backgrounds. Ages 8 to 12.
